Storefront
An existing storefront was converted into a single family residence, with open loft space, dining, study and kitchen on the first floor; bedrooms on the second. Of particular interest was the separation of spaces, while still maintaining long sightlines and an open feel.
The design answer was to open up the first floor as a loft space, separated from the kitchen by a “thick wall” full of utilities and storage. The study area was screened by a floating wall from the open living room.
The project was recognized by the Chicago’s Department of Planning as a well-executed prototype to be used in converting other similar storefronts.
The space was articulated through details, with use of a long clean wall to extend the space or made more intimate with particular compositions.
